On October 4, URI Executive Director Rev. Canon Charles P. Gibbs joined URI Global Council Trustee Swami Agnivesh, former Trustee Kay Lindahl and around 70 other religious scholars, international law experts, academics, government officials and civil society activists for a 4-day international consultation on “Faith, Shared Wisdom and International Law” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The consultation centers on three working groups: Building a more peaceful world; The future of humanity and the global environment; and Integrating a common world ethic into the world of international institutions. A fourth working group – the Implementation Group – will seek to help shape the work of the other groups into a Global Action Plan of programs and projects.
The purpose of the meeting is “to show how the shared wisdom embodied in our faiths can help shape international law and global policies in various spheres in our quest for a better world.” It is a joint project of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST), the Centre for Dialogue, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (WICPER), Colombo, Sri Lanka and the Sri Ramanuja Trust, Chennai, India, with support from the Government of Malaysia.
While in Kuala Lumpur, Rev. Gibbs also had the opportunity to celebrate URI’s 10thAnniversary with Global Council Trustee Dr. Amir Farid Isahak and many other URI members through a program entitled: A Decade of Creating Cultures of Peace, Justice and Healing – Looking Forward, Moving Onwards. The program was organized by URI Malaysia and the Inter-Faith Spiritual Fellowship (Insaf). Click here to read updates from Rev. Gibbs' travels.
