There will be an awareness seminar on THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMEN on 15 October 2010 at 4pm, by the URI WOMEN WING PAKISTAN in a village of Punjab in district Faisalabad called Chak 4. The women from the village who are working in fields, with poultry and herders will be invited. There will be 3 main speakers, Muslim and Christian. The participants will also be invited to share their valuable experience in the open forum.
We are giving the women awareness that no nation can rise to the height of glory unless its women are side by side with it; we are victims of evil customs. It is a crime against humanity that our women are shut up within the four walls of the houses as prisoners. There is no sanction anywhere for the deplorable condition in which our women have to live.
In most of the rural areas, women are like slaves even today. They are there just to obey their fathers, brothers and husbands. They do not have the right to decide about themselves because women are considered as foolish creatures according to the dominant social and cultural norms. Whereas rural women have been intensively involved in agriculture and its fields. They perform numerous labor intensive jobs such as weeding, grass cutting, picking corn, and separation of seeds from fiber. Rural women play a significant role in farming.
But their work is low paid, low status, casual, and lacks potential. We are making our mission to help her out to the right status. First of all by making her aware that “No one can make her feel inferior without her consent."
Our theme for the day will be "Recognize the important contributions of rural women!"
The message of the Secretary-General will be read. As Fr.James Channan is out of country for an interfaith meeting, his message will also be read for this occasion.
There will be about 50 rural women in the program.
