The URI Middle East and North Africa region hosted a workshop on “Issues of Human Rights in Media” on Wednesday, December 8th in Amman Jordan. It was led by Rowaida Mroue, a 2010 URI Youth Ambassador and founder of the Lebanese Interfaith Initiative Cooperation Circle. Mroue was in Jordan for the Arab Youth Media Forum.
The workshop, attended by members of Jordanian CCs and others, focused on media coverage of human rights issues. Participants learned techniques for writing articles, following up and monitoring coverage. The group also brainstormed about how to raise awareness of human right issues in the Jordanian community, including domestic violence, health care and political freedoms, among others.
“I was inspired by the reflections of Jordanian CCs and participants on issues of human rights monitoring in Arab and international media,” said Mroue.
In addition to her work with URI, Mroue recently founded the International Training & Conflict Resolution Center in Lebanon. “Peace in the Middle East starts by promoting social peacebuilding among young people,” said Mroue, “then politics shall come.”
