Dear Friends:
As you know the United Nations officially declared a famine in Southern Somalia
where millions of people are battling hunger in the midst of the region’s worst
drought in 60 years. Nearly half of the Somali population (3.7 million people) is
now in crisis. An estimated 2.8 million of these people are in the south.
United Religions Initiative in Africa calls for members of URI throughout the
world to help us address this crisis. As people from different religions, spiritual
expressions and indigenous traditions, we can rally together to pray to express
our deep concern and solidarity. As citizens of the world deeply committed to
peace, social justice, interfaith harmony and a better world, let us join hands and
stand with the people of Somalia in their time of crisis.
In addition to your prayers, we hope you will consider donating to our family
members from Somalia. All funds raised will go directly to a Somalia refugee
camp in Kenya. URI Africa has established a committee of URI members for this
purpose in Kenya. The committee includes our two URI CCs from Somalia, URI
Global Council member Ms. Rattan Channa from Kenya and URI Young
Ambassadors, Miss Nymbura Mundia from Kenya and Mr. Aynte Abdihakim from
Somalia.
Our collective efforts can bring positive change and hope to our URI family in
Somalia. Let us be part of the effort to save the lives of children, mothers and
elders who are dying of hunger.
