Sponsored by Church World Service and the San Francisco Interfaith Council, the April 29 CROP Walk attracted more than 117 walkers and generated more than $7,432 to support food banks, food pantries, community gardens and other hunger-fighting efforts throughout the United States. At least 25 percent of the funds raised by the April 29 walk will support programs to feed the hungry in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The San Francisco event is one of more than 1,600 CROP Hunger Walks that will take place throughout the United States this year. Formerly known as the Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) Walk, the annual fundraiser was first established in 1947 as a way for Midwest grain farmers to share the fruits of their fields with residents in Europe and Asia.
Today, the walks support global hunger-fighting development efforts – providing food and water, seeds and tools, wells and water systems and technical training and micro-enterprise loans throughout the world. More than 2,000 communities participate in the event annually, raising more than $4 million for Church World Service’s development efforts.
