The Aug. 15 event, which marked the 66th anniversary of Indian independence from British rule, also served as a celebration of the contribution of Indians to British society. Councillor David Ridgway, the Mayor of Kirklees Council, joined the celebration, which included presentations of Indian food, sweets and dance.
“Britain and India are ‘partners in peace’ and celebrate a multi-faceted, bilateral relationship based on shared values and common perceptions,” said Ms. Bali, who chairs the Huddersfield Interfaith Council.
“The Indian community brings cultural richness and a reinforcement of the key values of family life and the improvement of our children through education,” Ms. Bali added. “British Indian Day is an opportunity to embrace people of different cultures toward a shared understanding and a celebration of identity. We are committed to building a society in Britain underpinned by the principles of equality and diversity.”
