URI Charlotte’s 7 p.m. event at The Hindu Center’s Gandhi Bhavan Hall will include presentations by leaders from the North Carolina city’s many religious traditions, including Christians, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and Unitarians. Their “Pathways to Peace” will demonstrate how a diverse, interfaith community can work together to dispel hatred and create peace.
Local choirs and musicians from many traditions will perform at the event and traditional foods and sweets will follow the service. An outdoor candlelit service will follow the event.
“All year long, we work in our own religious communities, hoping our efforts for peace will make a difference,” said Dr. Emi Miller, chair of URI Charlotte’s Peace Day Committee. “On the International Day of Peace, we come together as a worldwide community, put aside our differences, hold hands with our neighbors and demonstrate the love for all humanity we so urgently seek during the rest of the year.”

The URI Charlotte event is dedicated to the International Day of Peace, an annual event celebrated by the United Nations and people throughout the world as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence. The theme of this year’s Peace Day – celebrated everywhere on Sept. 21 – is “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future,” in keeping with the recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
