“Riding the Peace Crane to Freedom: Ending Violence Against Children” will honor the life of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who lost her life to leukemia as a result of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. The event will include a display of the one thousand paper cranes that volunteers with Think Peace International created to honor the memory of Sadako Sasaki and the lives of children affected by violence throughout the world.
The evening of song, dance and praise is co-sponsored by the University Museum at Texas Southern University and by Think Peace International, a grassroots organization of teachers, artists and social activists creating solutions for building cultures of peace, justice and healing. Think Peace International became a URI Cooperation Circle in 2009.
The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace, an annual event celebrated by the United Nations and people throughout the world as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.
The theme of this year’s Peace Day is “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future,” in keeping with the recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. More information about URI’s celebration of the International Day of Peace is available at uri.org.
