The Sept. 21 celebration at the Sita Rama Hindu Temple in the U.K. city of Huddersfield included prayers, reflections and practical actions, and was open to members of the community.
“Through understanding and acceptance, we can promote positive solutions to conflicts in society,” Ms. Bali said. “Interfaith cooperation is an essential step towards harmony amongst all peoples. By enabling our rich and diverse traditions to complement and strengthen us, we can serve better and support the needs of all people, no matter what their color, culture or creed.”
The event took place in conjunction with the International Day of Peace, an annual holiday celebrated by the United Nations and people throughout the world as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.
The theme of this year’s Peace Day – celebrated everywhere on Sept. 21 – was “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future,” in keeping with the recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
