URI Indigenous representatives gather at Santa Rosa Junior College to be welcomed by Kashia Pomo people
In late June, more than 30 Indigenous representatives of the United Religions Initiative traveled from six continents to sit in circle, to engage in ceremony, to dream the future and to embody the global movement for peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings. It was my great honor to welcome members of URI’s Global Indigenous Initiative (GII) to this historic gathering, and to witness the power of connection among these wisdom keepers and wisdom teachers. Hidden Seeds of Natural Healing & Curing, a three-day retreat, held on the original land of the Pomo people in Northern California, was a remarkable moment for the URI community.
The values and principles espoused by the United Religions Initiative Charter have roots that extend back to the wisdom of the Indigenous peoples of the planet. For the past two decades, the shape and practices that form the heart of URI draw upon the wisdom of Indigenous traditions. This gathering itself was built upon the work of so many URI Indigenous leaders, friends and allies who have and continue to create this movement together. From the very beginning of URI, the insights of URI founders and early leaders including: Kaka Wera, Betsy Stang, Yoland Trevino, Rosalia Gutierrez, and Raul Mamani have forged a deep and broad foundation for this work. This has enabled the present day leadership of so many people, including Alejandrino Quispe and Audri Scott Williams in the Global Indigenous Initiative, Monica Willard at the United Nations, Rebecca Tobias in the Environmental CC, and Don Frew and Rachael Watcher in Multiregion, to work together with other supportive URI sisters and brothers to bring us to this historic moment.
The theme of this gathering drew on the teachings of the natural world, inviting us to live in harmony with Mother Earth and to listen deeply for the wisdom that she provides. The wisdom of Indigenous traditions is essential for the future of URI and the world. URI needs these teachings. The world needs these teachings. Let us all listen deeply to the insights and inspiration offered by our indigenous sisters and brothers. I have no doubt that, rooted in this wisdom, we will together cultivate these seeds in URI and they will grow to fulfill a vision of peace, justice and healing for us all and the world, a world that has been entrusted to our care.

We, people of diverse religions, spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions throughout the world, hereby establish the United Religions Initiative to promote enduring, daily interfaith cooperation, to end religiously motivated violence and to create cultures of peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings.
We unite in responsible cooperative action to bring the wisdom and values of our religions, spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions to bear on the economic, environmental, political and social challenges facing our Earth community.
In our PRINCIPLES:

A finales de Junio, más de 30 representantes Indígenas de la Iniciativa de Religiones Unidas viajaron de seis continentes para sentarse en un círculo , participar en ceremonias, soñar el futuro y encarnar el movimiento global por la paz, la justicia y la sanación de la Tierra y todos los seres vivos. Fue un gran honor para mí dar la bienvenida a los miembros de la Iniciativa Indígena Global de URI (GII) a esta asamblea histórica y ser testigo del poder de conexión entre éstos guardianes y maestros de sabiduría. Semillas Escondidas de Sanación Natural y Cura, un retiro de tres días, que tomó lugar en la tierra original de los Pueblos Pomo en el Norte de California, fue un momento notable para la comunidad de URI.
Los valores y principios adoptados por la Carta de la Iniciativa de Religiones Unidas tienen raíces que se extienden a la sabiduría de los Pueblos Indígenas del planeta. Por dos décadas, la forma y prácticas que forman el corazón de URI se han beneficiado con la sabiduría de las tradiciones Indígenas. El lema de esta asamblea se basó en las enseñanzas del mundo natural, invitándonos a vivir en armonía con la Madre Tierra y a escuchar con profundidad la sabiduría que ella nos brinda. La sabiduría de las tradiciones Indígenas es esencial para el futuro de URI y el mundo. URI necesita estas enseñanzas. El mundo necesita estas enseñanzas. Escuchemos todos con profundidad las ideas e inspiración ofrecida por nuestras hermanas y hermanos indígenas. No tengo dudas que, enraizados en esta sabiduría, cultivaremos juntos estas semillas en URI y ellas pueden crecer para alcanzar una visión de paz, justicia y sanación para todos nosotros y para el mundo, un mundo que se nos confió a nuestro cuidado.
