Recently a video clip showed a girl taking a stand against her father for a fly.
With determination and all her power she holds on to his hands to prevent him killing the insect: "Don't do it daddy, it is only a small insect".
Children can move us
The way children deal with snowflakes, a coloured lollipop...a small fly. Children sense things which we have outgrown. It is a kind of empathy that we have lost, a sensitivity that we have given up. As if we have shut ourselves off to the sensitive, in a society where things have to be "cool".
We maintain the illusion that we are less vulnerable that way and more hardened for reality of life. Sensitive people are without doubt more vulnerable, but they who reject the confrontation with the sensitive are not better off.
"Everything of value is defenceless "(Lucebert)
What did we lose? Or rather: what have we given up? The one, who goes through life the hard way, loses the sensitivity that is necessary to feel the power of defencelessness, the subtlety of beauty and the incredibility of experiencing a miracle.
When we are no longer able to see the miraculous in things we remain at the hard outside of life without experiencing its fullness. It is about the lost experience that everything in essence has an inside, that everything has a soul and is part of a larger whole in which we - believe it or not - take part.
Who said that "we can only enter the Kingdom of Heaven if we become like children"?
