Three indigenous women attend the Latin American Regional Assembly in Brazil in 2008.
Groups in Brazil focus on human rights, religious tolerance and poverty. The rights of Indigenous populations historically have been marginalized, leaving them with little access to education or employment. In response to this critical issue, in 2008, URI’s Latin American Cooperation Circles spearheaded an unprecedented gathering of indigenous leaders from 11 countries, resulting in an Indigenous Council to work for Indigenous intellectual property rights, formal education for Indigenous children and youth, and environmental protection.
