At the 12th annual Circles of Light Gala in San Francisco, California, North America, Tomoko Watanabe presents a gingko sapling to Eric Andersen (Superintendent of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park), URI Executive Director Rev. Victor H. Kazanjian, Jr., and The Right. Rev. William E. Swing, URI President and Founding Trustee.
The gingko sapling is descended from a tree that survived the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, Japan.
Tomoko is the Executive Director of ANT-Hiroshima (with ANT standing for Asian Network of Trust), which sprouted from her personal experience growing up in Hiroshima just eight years after the bomb. She spreads saplings from bomb-survivor trees worldwide as symbols of survival and hope, and as reminders of the importance of peace. This particular tree will grow in a place of honor at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California USA.
