The Bahá'í holy day of the Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh begins at sundown on May 28, 2015. It commemorates the anniversary of the day that the founder of the Bahá'í faith, Bahá'u'lláh, passed away in 1892. The day is often observed by reading scriptures and with prayer. Many people voyage to Bahá'í shrines in his honor; this photo shows the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh in 'Akká, Israel.
The Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh closely follows another Bahá'í holy day, which took place on May 23 of this year. It commemorates the anniversary of the same 1844 date, when the herald of the religion, The Bab (meaning “The Gate”), proclaimed that the Bahá'í religion was heralding an age of peace for humanity.
Celebrating each other's holidays has become a way for the United Religions Initiative family to show mutual respect and appreciation. URI is comprised of many grassroots peacebuilding groups called Cooperation Circles, which are formed by people of at least three different religions, spiritual expressions, and indigenous traditions. Explore our Cooperation Circles around the world, many of whom will be celebrating the Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh with their Bahá'í friends.
