The Kashi Foundation is a CC in Sebastian, Florida, USA with several hundred members of varying faith backgrounds. They promote volunteerism in the community and internationally as a means to create a model of person-to-person compassionate care, forming bonds with those who might otherwise be forgotten. Kashi serves in partnership with Riverfund, Inc. (The River Fund).
Each year on the second Saturday in May, US Postal Service letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns run the largest one-day food drive in the country. 49 million people face hunger every day in America, 16 million of who are children. Food insecurity, the lack of access to enough food for a healthy family, is on the rise, as more households must prioritize important needs such as housing or medical care over nutritionally adequate food.
The food insecurity rate is estimated at 18.5% in North Indian River County in Florida. Each year, residents are asked to leave non-perishable food donations at their mailbox, which are then picked up their letter carriers, sorted by volunteers at collection hubs, and distributed to local food banks.
This year was amazing, with more than 28,000 pounds of food donated! Many thanks to the local restaurants which donated delicious food for our volunteers,as well as the high school students who came to volunteer. It was wonderful to work with so many local churches, yoga studios, and businesses who sent volunteers or donated goods and services. Everyone at Stamp Out Hunger Sebastian is grateful!
