Greetings of Peace from North Zone, India.
World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on June 5th to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and Earth, mandated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The rapidly increasing impact of environmental destruction and pollution evident in India’s metropolitan cities, hill stations, and villages motivated four of our CCs to use this day to raise awareness and motivation for change in their communities. These four CCs organized different kinds of activities in their areas to address their unique environmental needs, and engaged different age groups and parts of the society.
Prayas Juvenile Center along with Kathak Dharohar CC organized a drawing competition and tree planting program for more than 300 homeless and disabled children at the center. The theme of the drawing competition was their understanding of the environment today, and was divided into two groups, for ages 8-14 and 15-20 years old. The portrayal of such a big theme as understood by children from underprivileged backgrounds was inspiring, showing that these issues touch all of us in different ways. Certificates were distributed to all along with special prizes for the winners. organized by the volunteer members to the winners of the competition.
Shanti Van CC - Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand) CC, situated in the hills, also planted trees for the betterment of the environment.
Bundelkhand CC organized a panel discussion with experts from several Indian states to address the pressing issue of drought in their region of Bundelkhand. The panel came up with several simple ways that could be used to combat the serious situation.
I would like to thank our L.O. and members especially D.K.Mishra, Sadhana Shrivastava, Shiv Vijay Singh, Brahmanand Mishra and several members of Kathak Dharohar for their support and co-operation. Without the efforts of our members, we would not be able to mobilize our communities in this way to make our society a better place.
May peace prevail on Earth.
