URI Korea participated in the 66th annual United Nations DPI/NGO Conference held in Gyeongju, Korea around the theme of “Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Together”. The conference aimed to discuss ways to empower and enable global citizenship to become “proactive contributors to a more peandaceful, tolerant, inclusive, and secure world” in support of SDG #4, to harness strategies and resources across civil society for education initiatives to promote lifelong learning and correction of inequalities. Implicit in strengthening civil society-led work in pursuit of this goal is also greater understanding of each culture’s unique perspectives and principles.
Following the international adoption of the new 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, civil society and NGO’s roles in sparking the changes needed to achieve these transformative changes will be increasingly important. These aims are particularly close to URI’s core principles, welcoming the gift of religious diversity and cultural tradition as a foundation for closer collaboration and change. We believe that peace and SDG thematic priorities look different in every country and community, and support our Cooperation Circles in finding sustainable approaches to implementation, building bridges between people and cultures for our global future.
The theme of this year’s International Day of Peace is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” Stay tuned for news on how URI CCs incorporate them into their work on the ground!
