ATTENTION ALL FREEDOM LOVING PEOPLE--URGENT REQUEST.
“Time is growing near for the Children of SHAPE Community Center to go on their 27th Annual Freedom Tour. In order for them to go, we need your help. Join us in an effort of cooperative economics and help us reach our goal. We need $7,500 before the 7th of July since we are leaving on the 14th. GET ON BOARD and get on that Freedom Tour train and engage in some collective works and responsibility.” ~ Deloyd Parker
In the Spirit of the great Freedom Riders of the 1960s, S.H.A.P.E. Community Center has taken young people on a journey of history throughout the Deep South (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansas). Re-tracing the "Civil Right Movement," students visit historical landmarks and Historically Black Universities. This year’s Freedom Tour begins July 14th and ends on the 20th.
Some of the sites visited are Tuskegee University, Brown A.M.E. Chapel, the Voter's Rights Museum, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, and the Symbolic March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge (this auspicious historical event was documented in the film “Selma” released in January, 2015). Civil Rights activists attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on their way to Montgomery, Alabama. Young people are able to re-enact these moments in history by crossing the bridge with their group.
When the tour ends, young people and their mentors will conduct forums to share information and their combined experiences. Through video documentation, written reports and question and answer sessions, participants educate others about places of historical significance.
Make your money count as we educate our children about the history and the legacies of the Civil Rights movement. The Freedom Tour changes lives and secures our future. GIVE GENEROUSLY!
SPECIAL NOTE: Think Peace International proudly supports the work of SHAPE Community Center and makes this special request to all of TPI's friends and patrons. This is the 27th year of the FREEDOM TOUR and it continues to change the lives of children EVERY DAY. Be generous because this where money counts. Thank you. P. K. McCary, Exec. Director
