URI Cooperation Circles (CCs) build bridges for change by identifying needs in their communities and uniting people together across religious, cultural, and social differences for the betterment of the whole. Small shifts lay the groundwork for all the bigger initiatives and policies at national, regional, and international levels by establishing a network of collaboration and local ownership, ensuring unity in purpose and sustainability in execution.
This year’s International Day of Peace on September 21 focuses on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are 17 thematic priorities identified by people, civil society groups, and governments as necessary for achieving the peace and development we need, to be achieved by 2030. More than ever before, fulfilling these joint goals will require localized actions like our CCs do every day to build change from the ground up and communicate their community’s unique needs and challenges. CCs like MIMAMO in Mozambique’s work to establish women-driven local enterprise and cultural kitchens help drive change for SDGs 1, 5, and 8; URI Korea embodied Goal 16 by representing URI at the UNDPI Conference on civil society engagement with the SDGs; and Goal 17 is at the heart of URI as a network as we partner with UN agencies, interfaith groups, and other civil society movements for inclusive progress.
