Greetings of peace and blessings from URI-Africa.
This is to inform you that URI-Africa took part in a consultation meeting on “the role of civil society organizations in the promotion of peace, security, stability and silencing the guns in Africa.”
The consultation meeting was organized by the Peace and Security Cluster of the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council, to further sensitize the African Civil Society on the African Union policy framework on peace and security and silencing the guns, in the context of Agenda 2063, and to develop a Civil Society action plan to complement the overall plan for the implementation of the 3-year action plan for Silencing the Guns in 2020. The meeting was held in Lusaka, Zambia from November 3 to 5, 2016.
The consultation meeting, which was organized ahead of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) retreat, brought together 35 civil society organizations, (CSO) including URI-Africa, to brainstorm on their role in the promotion of peace, security and the stability of Africa.
Among the Objectives of the Consultation were to adopt a work plan, recommendations and resolutions on the engagement of CSOs with the PSC and other organs and institutions working on issues of peace and security in Africa.
URI-Africa brought the voices of faith-based and interfaith organizations to the meeting and highlighted the role of faith-based and interfaith organizations in promoting a culture of peace, security and addressing the issue of radicalization, countering violent extremism, hate speech and silencing the guns.
