PRESS RELEASE
November 21, 2016
United Religions Initiative - Africa and Peace One Day signed an agreement to further enhance the working partnership between the two organizations to promote a culture of peace in Africa.
The partnership agreement was signed in Addis Ababa on November 14, 2016 by Ambassador Mussie Hailu, Regional Director of URI-Africa and Representative of URI to the African Union Commission and United Nations office in Africa, and Mr. Laurence Khan, Head of Global Campaigns, Peace One Day.
During the signing of the agreement, Amb. Mussie Hailu said, “As a bridge-building interfaith organization, URI–Africa is delighted to sign this agreement with Peace One Day to further enhance the existing working partnership between the two organizations to promote a culture of peace, non-violence, peace education, interfaith harmony and raising awareness on the International Day of Peace (September 21). This agreement definitely strengthens the institutional partnership of the two organizations. Last year the Africa Peace Award was presented to Peace One Day and to the Head of Global Campaigns of Peace One Day Mr. Laurence Khan in acknowledgement of organizing a campaign in the Great Lakes region of Africa to engage all sectors of society to stand together for peace, in particular the leaders of all different religious communities, including the Countdown to Peace Day Forums in Goma, Kinshasa, Kigali, Kampala, and Nairobi, which members of URI also took part in.”
On his part, Mr. Laurence Khan said, “Today's Memorandum of Understanding is based on a good standing cooperation between the two organizations and this agreement will help to further solidify our joint effort in promoting a culture of peace and non-violence in Africa. Peace One Day highly appreciates the work of URI-Africa for building bridges for its grassroots member organizations with policy makers and international peace organizations like Peace One Day”.
Peace One Day is a non-profit peace organization founded in 1999 in London, dedicated to raising awareness worldwide of the International Day of Peace, 21 September (Peace Day), an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence.
