Last holiday season, Kashi Foundation, a URI North America Cooperation Circle, organized volunteers to visit a nearby impoverished community to provide food and other essentials to the residents there. They gifted each family a turkey “and all the fixins” for a full holiday meal. It was a great opportunity for the families to see people of many different religions and traditions coming together around a common holiday spirit.
This year, Jews and Christians celebrated winter holidays on the same day. Hanukkah began on December 24th at sundown, which was also Christmas Eve. December 25th, Christmas Day, fell on the second night of Hanukkah.
As families around the world gather to celebrate these holidays at the same time, it is a good opportunity to reflect on our commonalities as well as the diversity that makes our traditions unique.
