In URI’s CBS special “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” representatives of many traditions offered words and blessings from their own practices, including a statement from the Humanist tradition. “Peace – it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”

World Humanist Day has been celebrated by Humanists since the 1980s as a way to publicize the positive values and to share the global concerns of the Humanist movement. Humanism is a system of thought emphasizing human rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanists seek to solve humanity’s challenges through emphasizing shared, global human needs and appealing to the value and goodness in human beings.

People celebrate World Humanist Day in a variety of ways, including:

  • Educational conferences, lectures, and classes
  • Community discussions
  • Parties and picnics
  • Outreach showcasing practical, life-affirming philosophies
