The local government was not able to give the slum attention or assistance, so local URI members stepped in.
This is a slum in Gorgawo, West Mumbai, India (Bhagat Sing Nagar 1&2) which contains people of many religions. In July 2017, there were about 50 thousand people living in the slum. Because of heavy rain, the area was flooded with standing water. “There is a big, open drainage area which was choked by rainwater and garbage. One school kid lost his life because he got stuck in that drainage water,” explains URI member Anjan Sadavarte. Many more residents developed skin diseases and fevers due to the terrible slum conditions.
The local government was not able to give the slum attention or assistance, so local URI members stepped in. They ran a rally and held daily awareness programs for community children and youth. As a result of their actions shining a spotlight on the slum’s trouble, the local government decided to run a health camp in Bhagat Sing Nagar on 20th August 2018.
