Makara Sankranti (also known as Makaraa Sankrānti or Maghi) is a 5,000-year-old Hindu festival marking the sun’s journey after the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days. Makara Sankranti is a festive holiday. Children celebrate by going from house to house, singing and asking for treats or pocket money. Hindus celebrating the festival put up colorful decorations and fly kites, and hold fairs, dances, bonfires, and feasts. This year, Makara Sankranti begins on January 14.
