Movement to Amplify Women’s Voices Launches in Selma, Alabama, USA on United Nations Peace Day With Rally and Walk Across Historic Bridge

September 10, 2019 - Cottonwood, AL - 20 Million Women Strong (20MWS), a grassroots movement to uplift and amplify women’s voices around the world, is officially launching on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 1pm ET, with a rally and walk across the Edmund Pettus bridge in historic Selma, Alabama.

This “Global Action Event” coincides with the United Nations International Day of Peace, and initiates a year-long effort via 20MWS to raise awareness, inspire action through “Global Action Days”, and highlight the many ways that women everywhere are leading the shift in consciousness necessary to positively impact conditions for women, children, families, and the Earth.

Audri Scott Williams, URI Global Council Secretary, Multiregion Trustee, and Cooperation Circle leader, states, “20 Million Women Strong is a movement around the world for women, children, families, and the Earth, born of the conviction that, when women stand up together, change happens!” Early support for 20MWS has come from the Women’s Interfaith Network of the URI (WIN-URI) and URI at the United Nations.

Celebrity musical artist and Alabama native Melba Moore has joined the movement as a 20MWS Goodwill Ambassador, saying, “The soul of our nation and the world is crying out. We, 20 Million Women Strong, are 'lifting every voice' for a world that works for all women, children, families, and the Earth.”

Women and women’s allies and supporters are invited to join the launch event in Selma. Those unable to physically attend are encouraged and invited to organize 20 Million Women Strong events in their own communities or align events already planned with 20MWS and post testimonies, photos, and videos to the 20MWS Facebook page. Events may include marches/walks, prayer vigils, artistic expressions, concerts, service projects, and more.
