One very important event took place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last week on Friday, 8.11.2020.
The Holocaust and the Bulgarian cinema was a peer-led retreat by Olga Lengyel Institute (TOLI). The main educator and lecturer of the conference was Dr. Petar Gramatikoff, head expert for religious and ethnic question in Plovdiv Municipality and URI Europe Global Trustee.
The idea behind the conference was to make an overview of the Bulgarian point of view about the Holocaust in three different eras: Socialism, Transition to Democracy, and the Modern-day Society. Five different movies were reviewed and discussed with a number of teachers, students and community leaders.
Special guests were Mr. Ahmed Pehlivan, the head of the Muslim religious authority, and Mrs. Maria Valneva, regional coordinator of the state commission against discrimination. Hosts of the seminar were the Shalom Aleihem Cultural Center and the Plovdiv Synagogue “Zion”.
The event was organized by Alex Levi, youth leader of the Jewish community in Plovdiv and Chief of the Center for Social Innovations. It was planned to be streamed online but could not be due to technical issues. Hopefully, the next initiative will be available live online to include a wider audience.
