Society for Health Education and Development (SHED) Cooperation Circle is an NGO that has been operating in the Anantapur district for the past 31 years. SHED works with both the rural working class and different castes to bring harmony and take up development activities to the rural poor. They organize rights-based activities, such as educating drop-out children, and address women’s issues. They build communal harmony, and promote the Right to Information act. SHED holds development activities, such as boring drinking water wells, providing housing and sanitary latrines, and building rainwater harvesting structures. CC members administer rehabilitation programming for vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS and capacity-building programs for 2,500 women. Additionally they create awareness about women’s empowerment, the promotion of sustainable livelihood among youth and Dalit groups, as well as construct rooftop rainwater harvesting structures to conserve rainwater for nutritional gardens. These activities enhance the possibility of bringing harmony and minimizing violence - enhancing rural communities’ quality of life. SHED organizes a network group of NGOs; namely, ASRA (Association for Services in Rural Areas), with seven NGOs as members. Together, they run trainings, group discussions and workshops to achieve their collective goals.
