The Australia Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC) organizes “Faiths for Climate Justice Actions” as part of global multi faith week of action for Mother Earth.
Climate justice protects creation and protects the rights of people against major environmental threats.
The Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC), a Cooperation Circle of URI, with faith communities across Australia, is organizing a set of actions as part of a global multi-faith Week of Action from May 3 to 12.
The centerpiece will be large banners placed at iconic places of worship calling on the Australian government to stop new coal and gas projects and provide proper levels of climate finance for countries hardest hit by climate disasters.
This year’s multi-faith mobilization builds on a campaign in October 2022. At that time faith communities from Australia and the Pacific held multi-faith services in support of an open letter from over 100 senior faith leaders calling on the Australian Prime Minister to stop all new fossil fuel projects.
Similar actions will be held all around the world and faith communities large and small are invited to participate. The Week of Action is coordinated at the global level by the GreenFaith International network, of which ARRCC is a member. The unifying theme internationally will be the urgent need to phase out fossil fuels. There will be a particular emphasis on the need for governments to endorse a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
In previous years there have been more than 400 actions spanning more than 40 countries.
ARRCC is unique in the Australian context, being both multi-faith and focused on climate change as the key issue. Members of ARRCC respect each other’s faiths and seek, through the spirit of collaboration, to be a powerful voice advocating for a sustainable future for all. They believe that as people dedicated to the common good, inspired by their beliefs, and energized by their spirituality, people of all faiths can and should be at the forefront of creating a safe climate. While celebrating the uniqueness of their different traditions, they stand together in working for an ecologically and socially sustainable future.
