Our Peace Day event went well, as it was full of education and sensitizing people about the environment. The event was amazing and more than our imagination, considering the turnout of people. We are very happy to confirm that many people attended with much solidarity and many commitments to work together, to promote peace and to care for the environment. We had a good time to see government officials, faith leaders and business people coming to strengthen our community together. We had many communities get involved. Many participants gave testimonies based on challenges we are facing due to climate change. About 4500 participants and 46 volunteers took part in the event.

Undugu Family of Hope - World Peace Day Celebration - 21st September 2019
Following the ongoing heated political campaigns in Kibera due to the forthcoming by-elections, Undugu Family of Hope Centre, in conjunction with other Kibera Peace stakeholders, are organizing a series of events to celebrate the International Day of Peace day 2019. The first event is scheduled to take place on the 21st of September 2019 at the Kibera Lindi Mosque and will bring on board about 300 Kibera residents drawn from the different sectors of the community.
The activities will begin at 8am, where the 23 candidates vying for the vacant Kibera constituency seat will be hosted by the community members for a breakfast meeting, where they will get an opportunity to listen to the needs and aspirations of the community. They will also be engaged in signing and saying a peace pledge to ensure that their campaigns will not be divisive in any way. Later on, the candidates will join the rest of the community in a community service to clean up the community in line with this year’s International Peace Day theme, “Climate Action for Peace” and conclude the day by gracing the finals of the Kibera inter-base football tournament, whose finals will be played at the Kibera Undugu grounds.
This day is dedicated to helping build relationships, trust and encourage communication amongst Kibera residents. We hope that you will find time to join us and support this initiative, as we celebrate yet another milestone in promoting peaceful co-existence in Kibera and the whole country at large.

Peaceful co-existence among neighboring nations is a key element to promoting trade, investment and human capital development which lead to solving some basic social problems like unemployment, poverty and hunger. These social problems are an influential undertone to conflict and civil unrest. Adherence to national laws without key references to regional laws and treaties signed by states within a region could form a basis for regional conflicts hence defeating the common goals for establishing regional blocs in Africa.
In recent times, Africa has witnessed a new trend of conflict - xenophobic, homophobic and afrophobic attacks in South Africa. The most recent is Ghana and Nigeria and this development if not curbed will become a serious threat to Africa Unity. It is against this the Africa Centre for Peace Building-Ghana, Global Educators for All Initiatives-Nigeria, The Emmanuel Ivorgba Foundation and United Religions Initiatives -West Africa brought together West Africa governments, media, legal practitioners, academic and civil society organizations within the West Africa sub-regions to dialogue on how best to promote sisterhood, peace and trade within the West Africa.

On Saturday, 21st September 2019, WNRCRT-CC in Malawi joined the rest of the Global Community in commemorating this year's International Day of Peace. The CC has an environmental concern about poor management of plastic wastes in Malawi fueled by lack of proper regulatory polices amidst the influx of plastic products especially juices whereby the cost of production is lesser than that of environmental damages. The common practice for managing plastic wastes is open burning, which contributes a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is one of the major greenhouse gases causing global warming and in turn bringing about climate change. The CC commemorated the day through various activities conducted in Lilongwe under the sub-theme: “Sustainable Plastic Waste Management – Better Malawi – Better World”.

PEACE PROCESSION AT KARICKAM. See more photos on Facebook.
The URI South India region organised a peace rally at Karickam International Public School, on September 21, as the whole world observes this day as UN World Peace Day. Everybody gathered at Karickam International Public School in Kottarakkara between 7:00 and 8:45 am. There were five educational institutions which are connected to URI. Zero Limits CC, URI South India region, participated in the peace rally. Each institution upheld different themes representing UN Peace Day. The rally covered about 8 to 10 Km.
Some of the participants highlighted religious equality and Indian culture in keeping the promise of unity in diversity. A group of students from Kollam presented the role of protecting the environment in keeping peace. They represented five subtle elements (air, earth, fire, water and aether), which are considered the core elements of nature - which is called "Panchabhoothas" in Vedas. They also grabbed the attention of the crowd by carrying plants on their hands, which were connected to oxygen masks, which showed the pathetic situation that every human being is about to face in the nearby future: lack of oxygen. The rate of deforestation is so high that we are intaking polluted air and we know that the trees are the only filter machines we have in nature. We are also aware of the rate of oxygen in this era, and how expensive it will be in the future. "It is unimaginable for me right now," said a Zero Limits CC member. "The thought itself takes my breath away. From where will my fellow sisters and brothers will breath pure air in the future? It gives me more pain than oxygen which I breathe now."
"They also gave us more insight on recycling and reusing things, because their placards were made with waste materials like plastic bottles and useless newspapers and sticks. I am glad to be a part of this team who pointed on the environment protection, which points to this year's theme 'Climate Action for Peace' literally. The whole rally was covered and witnessed by members from the URI Global Support office - The Rev. Victor H. Kazanjian, Jr., URI Executive Director, and Isabelle Ortega-Lockwood, Director of Global Communications and Strategic Planning."
"I would like to borrow the words from the famous album 'Heal the World' by Michael Jackson. 'Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race. There are people dying, if you care enough for the living, make a better place for you and for me.' Yes, we can make this world a better place to live in for you and for me, together. Let's plant, breathe, and live on our mother Earth, together."

Love Care Foundation (LCF) observed International Peace Day at all centres. Keeping in mind the theme ‘Climate Action for Peace,’ activities were organized at all the centres. The day was devoted to organizing workshops for women to strengthen the ideals of peace. The aim was to throw light on the importance of combating climate change as a way to protect and promote peace all over the world.
Participants were made aware as to how climate change poses a substantial threat to international peace and security. The only choice we have is that each human being must rely on himself or herself, and must take responsibility and must play a positive role to conserve natural resources to achieve peace. Women can play a big role to bring peace and can teach the generations by changing opinions and slowly eroding old barriers, as women are the backbone of society.
The LCF team will plan continuous activities so that peace can be achieved with understanding and not by force. The actions taken now will definitely start a chain reaction that will result in bringing peace on earth.

We folded more than 1000 Origami Cranes in remembering the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Marianne Horling will tell the story of the girl Sadako, who died 10 years after this catastrophe by leukemia. Karimah Stauch will speak about URI as an organization, which stands for peace in the world. Peace songs and prayers will build the frame and we'll decorate the "Trinkpavillon" with the cranes and posters of different religions. Information about the work of URI, as well as cranes, will be handed out to the people. The local press will be informed. We worked together also with people of other organizations, like: a singer and presbyter of the evangelic church, who trained us singing the peace songs; a refugee organization (Ausbildung Statt Abschiebung, AsA), which Marianne is working with; a teacher from the elementary school "Andreas-Schule" in Rüngsdorf (Bad Godesberg), who folded cranes with the school-children; the organization "Bürger für Bad Godesberg" (Citizen for Bad Godesberg) as the owner of the "Trinkpavillion". "They are all fond of URI now and voluntarily work with us," reports Marianne Horling.
" It will be a public event on a Saturday afternoon. The location as well as the time is good to reach a lot of people. At the preparation of the event, many people came for the first time in contact with URI and our CC. They helped us because they are convinced to work for a good thing. Every Thursday we offered in the "Trinkpavillon" a workshop for crane-folding, telling people why we do it and introducing them to URI. This action also brought people together who haven't met before. To do something together gives a feeling, not to be alone with their hopes and dreams."
Nine volunteers are expected, and about 100 participants.

Interview with Ivo Poletto, a specialist in climate change: Members of Brasilia URI CC interviewed Bachelor Ivo Poletto, Brazilian authority on Climate Change.
Ivo Poletto is a philosopher and social scientist. He is currently working in Brasilia as an educational advisor at the Climate Change and Social Justice Forum, which articulates social movements, entities and pastoral organizations around the defense of the social rights of the population affected by climate change caused by global warming. From 1975 to 1992, he was the first executive secretary of the Pastoral Land Commission; from 1993 to 2002, he was advisor to the Brazilian Caritas; In 2003 and 2004, he was a team member of the Federal Government's Zero Hunger Program Social Mobilization.
URI Brasilia CC: For International Day of Peace (September 21st) this year the UN calls for reflections and actions linking Peace with Climate Change. What could you tell us about it?
Ivo Poletto: Climate change is part of the socio-environmental crisis that is affecting both the Earth and the poor at the same time. If practices of unbridled consumption of fossil energy sources are not replaced by effectively renewable sources such as the sun, winds and biomass, if agricultural systems based on extensive monoculture, the rampant use of pesticides and transgenic artificial seeds, which consume 70% of freshwater, are not replaced by proven agroecological and agroforestry systems around the planet, there will be no way to preserve what remains of forests, soils will be desertified and living things will be poisoned; and if the market system, based on the steady increase in consumerism of goods not necessary for life, is not replaced by conscious choices of simpler forms of consumption and consumption limited to what is necessary for a decent and healthy life - there will be no way to prevent climate change from driving national and international migration, impoverishing more and more individuals, communities and peoples, misery, hunger and death from hunger.
Following the path that aggravates climate change, therefore, means betting on increasing the concentration of wealth along with deepening poverty and misery, and hence conflicts, violence, wars. Only structural changes in the system that has triggered and aggravated global warming, climate change, rising poverty and changes in the consumerist lifestyle can, and indeed will, be the path to build peaceful relations between individuals and peoples, and the people with Mother Earth.
URI Brasilia CC: What can religions do about climate change?
Ivo Poletto: As I understand it, religions can call people to relate to a God who is all about lovingly creating the living environments they have freely found to live in, and therefore encouraging them to care for those environments for the sake of all life forms, or they need to be frank and state what kind of God they worship. Remember that the temptation to create idols is part of the experience of humanity. They serve to engage people in the worship of something, money, for example, or a situation, such as wealth, by creating an illusory but engaging theology - indeed, an ideology - that the idol would have the power to fulfill each person's desire for enrichment. And these idols are not interested in the consequences of enrichment - and in practice they only favor the enrichment of the few who create these cults, and lead people to moralistic indifference towards the environment and those who have not received the idol's attention.
But there are religious practices that promote theological relationships and practices of love for the people and all beings that make up Mother Earth. Native people with centuries of history usually practice what they call Good Living: relations of community cooperation between people, and harmonious relations with the Earth.
And there are religions, such as Christianity, which is returning to the messages and practices of its founder, Jesus of Nazareth, and propose, as Pope Francis is doing, that people who follow Jesus seek to re-educate themselves to live and witness “integral ecology”, that is, to be aware that everything was created, including human beings, by God, and the Earth as a gesture of love, and therefore the mission of humanity is to take care, with creative love, of the people and of Mother Earth as space and source of life.
As it turns out, there are religions that promote peace by fighting the systemic and individual practices that trigger and aggravate climate change. And it is desirable that all religions, with their own characteristics, make their contribution to the true path of peace.

9th Walk for Religious Freedom
Hundreds of believers of various religions gathered on Sunday afternoon for the 9th Walk for Religious Freedom, held in Icaraí Beach, South Zone of Niterói, RJ. Set to happen at 3 pm, the concentration began at 1 pm in front of the Rectory of Fluminese Federal University – UFF and a lane was interdicted by the Municipal Guard for safety of the walkers.
According to the president of the Umbanda Spiritualist Union of Brazil and event organizer, Carlos Novo, the event is held to raise awareness and to preach love. “We have been witnessing many threats around religions that refer to the Afro-Brazilian people, Umbanda and Candomblé mainly. They say we worship the devil and it doesn't exist for us. We worship nature and the elements that are essential for human survival,” he said.
The coordinator and conductor of the Holy Family Musical Band Project (BAMUSF) celebrated the children's participation in the event. “It is a joy to be here today in this act that marks the integration between religions. And who better than our children, our future, to be here shouting for religious freedom?” he asked.
Oca Mbya Coordinator Cristiane Silva said she attended the event to “strengthen indigenous faith - Brazil's first religion.” The village of Maricá also participated. “It would be great if everyone could understand that there are indigenous people nearby. Our community is here today because it also needs religious freedom. Together we will raise this flag,” said Cristiane.
Father Luiz Antônio Lopes Ricci of the Archdiocese of Niterói said that for the Catholic Church religious freedom is sacred. “Everyone has the right to make their own choice. We are here to reinforce this teaching of the church, also of our Pope, and to denounce any form of discrimination, because it cannot come from God. What does not unite separates and what separates is diabolical. What comes from God is love,” he concluded.

Location: Jordan
URI MENA Office, in cooperation with Desert Bloom, Naya, and Mercy Cooperation Circles in Jordan, honored the International Day of Peace by organizing an interactive workshop on the theme, “Our earth urges you to become a peace-builder - Stories from religious traditions.”
The Muslim Imam highlighted that environmental awareness and protection of natural resources is an integral part of Islamic beliefs: As viceroys of Allah on this earth, we have to utilize natural resources in a sustainable manner in order to ensure that Allah’s bounties to continue. Therefore, Islamic attitude towards the environment and natural resource conservation is not only based on the prohibition of over-exploitation but also on sustainable development. The Holy Quran says:
“O children of Adam! … eat and drink: but waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters.” (Surah 7:31).
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged the planting of trees and the cultivation of agriculture which are considered as good acts. He said: “There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him.”
The Imam explained how Islamic teachings urge us to take care about everything around us, whether it is natural resources (soil, vegetation, animals, air, water, mineral resources...etc.) or man-made things.
The Baha'i speakers presented a paper on “Seizing the Opportunity: Redefining the challenge of climate change,” reviewing the global initiatives and attempts to sustain peace since World War One. They highlighted the failures of global efforts in achieving peace and sustaining resources. Therefore, it is time to seize the opportunity and take the next step in the transition, from a state-centered mode of interacting on the world stage, to one rooted in the unity, which connects us as the inhabitants of one biosphere, the citizens of one world and the members of one human civilization. The nature of this step, its significance, and some of the means for its accomplishment, are the focus of the Baha'i International Community’s contribution to forging a path out of the climate change challenge. To contribute to this important discourse, we assert that the principle of the oneness of humankind must become the ruling principle of international life. This principle does not seek to undermine national autonomy or suppress cultural or intellectual diversity. Rather, it makes it possible to view the climate change challenge through a new lens - one that perceives humanity as a unified whole, not unlike the cells of the human body, infinitely differentiated in form and function yet united in a common purpose which exceeds that of its component parts. This principle constitutes more than a call for cooperation; it seeks to remold anachronistic and unjust patterns of human interaction in a manner that reflects the relationships that bind us as members of one human race, and resources stemming from the belief of the oneness of mankind.
The Christian speaker highlighted the fact that Adam was a special creation of God made from the dust of the earth, and then the breath of God in which the spirit of life and man became a living being. Environmental peacemaking is based on the principle of our shared dependence on natural, environmental and health resources that facilitate cooperation between communities and nations and thus enable us to promote peacemaking.
The concept of environmental peacemaking is based on three pillars of sustainable development: economic sustainability, social and cultural sustainability and environmental sustainability.
As is the case in other religions, the Christian religion stated the religious culture of preserving the environment as follows:
- The Old Testament of the Bible: The skies of heaven for the Lord and the earth made it for the people of man.
- Pope John Paul II sent a message in which he said that respect for the environment is a manifestation of human respect for the Creator. Therefore, he considered that the destruction of man to nature is the bullying of the Creator.
In conclusion, one must learn that the earth cannot renew itself with its wealth, riches and tenders forever while consuming it without calculation. Collective action is essential to keep the earth from a religious, social, moral and economic duty.
After the speeches, the participants shared their ideas about how to become a promoter for peace and a protector of nature. As an action plan, the participants agreed to clean a natural rural forest and to visit an Ecovillage to promote ecotourism.

Christian, Druze, Jewish and Muslim women from neighboring communities were welcomed by the principal and teachers to the Al Sharki school in the village of Jisr A Zarka. We shared with 100 sixth grade students some teachings about Peace and the Environment from our religions as a preparation for the IDP. Many students had never met a Druze or Christian and were eager to find out about our religions. The Principal requested that we return to deepen the students understanding of the multi-faith reality in our land. We were hosted to a meal by the local women and taken on a walking tour to the sea.
For many students, this was their first social encounter with people of other religions and they had many questions. Many had never met a Druze or a Christian and they were filled with curiosity. They asked how we pray and were given examples of prayers from the religions. They wanted to know where we pray and what holidays we celebrate. Some were surprised to learn from the Christian representative that she is an Arab. They were delighted with direct interaction and sharing an educational experience. One student said the best thing that had happened to them was for women of different religions to visit their class. They were encouraged to think deeply about the environment in their own school, community, and their seashore. They responded eagerly with their concerns about the future of the environment and what they can do to improve it.
One woman shared that we all agreed, the principal, the teachers, and the visitors, “This is true education!”

At 17:00 (5:00 o’clock PM) the Palestinian police and photographer arrived, and we all gathered with our signs and banners in front of the Omar Mosque in the city center. The guest speakers began to deliver their speeches to the participants and all the people in the audience. Two second-generation saplings, descendants of ginkgo trees that survived the nuclear blast on Hiroshima, were planted at the San Francisco Japanese Tea Garden in a ceremony that also honored former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and Dame Charlotte Mailliard Shultz for their advocacy around nuclear disarmament. URI held the ceremonial planting in conjunction with the United Nations’ International Day for Peace (Sept. 21) and its International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (Sept. 26).

Cooperation Circle: Think Round, Inc.
Location: San Francisco, CA, USA
Think Round's International Peace Day Activity centered on conceptualizing, producing and sharing a short video that both served the messages of Climate Action for Peace and to promote our other International Peace Day activities that included four exhibitions of artwork centered on Families of Abraham (Jews, Christians, and Muslims). Two of these exhibits opened on September 29 at our gallery and Calvary Presbyterian Church and another this past Sunday, October 13, at the Islamic Society of SF. Our final exhibition will open on November 1 at Sherith Israel Temple with a reception on November 15th. These exhibitions run through December 29th, 2019 and are accompanied by a full program of related activities including family art-making classes, salon/suppers, school tours, and meditations.
The impact of preparing this video, and for these exhibitions, receptions, artist talks, art classes and suppers have broadened the community outreach of all three of our collaborating venues, as well as have given our CC members ways to connect with and worship with the members of these several faiths of one father. At each reception, we stress in our powerpoint presentations these messages: "Earth is home. Humans are family." "Healthy Air, Water, & Soil Mean Healthy Plants, Animals & People." We also stress that Think Round's Paradise Projects is in the making to mark the end of marginalizing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the suppression of women and children by male-dominated world religions.
We printed 100 brochures and 250 programs for these events, which are all gone now. We'll print more before our final exhibit opens on November 1.
Cooperation Circle: Charlotte Red Bench Garden
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
Charlotte Red Bench Garden and Galilee Ministries of East Charlotte came together again to recognize International Day of Peace under the rays of a pecan tree at the Peace Garden of Galilee Ministries. There the 17 United Nations Sustainable Goals hung as beautifully suspended art discs created by Leslie Flanagan of Lemondaisy Designs. Toni Boggess Hagerman, Executive Director, welcomed the community and explained Galilee’s commitment to these goals. "I was honored to be present to offer the charge for orange prayer flags to be added to the already adorned nearby fence. This offering of transformation from the breath of attendees to the winds of change with hopes for our communities to prosper in peace. Thank you Galilee Ministries, artists and attendees," said URI member and CC leader Adeola Fearon. "When individuals share a common desire to bring change to a community, their hearts become encouraged to be and do more. The realization of how solidarity is important to the wellbeing of self, community and the planet becomes evident. We desire to be in communion with each other’s stories; create new possibilities; and, join the journey for roads of discovery. Our templates are forever imprinted anew."

Cooperation Circle: Camp Anytown Las Vegas
Location: Las Vegas, USA
Camp Anytown Las Vegas celebrated International Day of Peace 2019 through an online campaign that focused on 3 main areas: No Place for Hate in Our Community, Youth Power, and Peace Building.
Our "Hate Has No Home Here" campaign brought together 13 high school and college aged youth representing 6 different nationalities, 6 high schools, 2 universities, and 6 different religious/spiritual/humanistic beliefs for a photo shoot. These youth gathered together despite their differences and acknowledge that their differences will not tear them apart; instead, they will bring them together to evict hate from the Las Vegas community.
Our online campaign ads have garnered over 10,000 views from all over North America and the world. Since then, we added 70 more high school students from all over Southern Nevada to be a part of our campaign.
Our campaign was particularly special because it was within a few days of the 2nd anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest music festival mass shooting that took place in our city. The tragedy that took place on October 1, 2017 did NOT define us, instead, it brought our community together and made us #VegasStrong.
⠀
At Anytown, we have made it clear that hate will never have a home in our community. Not today, not tomorrow, NOT EVER.

We were so happy to know that there is a Peace Day. We are members of this community and we don't really think of peace and climate of our earth. Joining this event, URI peace event gave me a lot of new ideas that I didn't know before. I am a youth and member of Youth Interfaith for Peace CC. I am so happy to share with our elder community members about URI and call for caring of our nature. I really enjoyed the gathering. As monks, and members of CC, we learned a lot more about URI. It also reminded me about my role to educate community members about care for nature.
